Abstract

The advent of AI has opened new opportunities in learning and understanding the learning process from an angle that was not previously available. AI offers new kinds of dialogue-based interactions that previously were possible only between humans. Today, AI can help us understand students’ thought processes (from the interactions between students and AI tools) and reduce the inference we had to make about what learners know, do, or want. On the one hand AI can automate many aspects from the learning process to provide efficiency, scalability, and accessibility of educational interventions. With the usage of state-of-the-art AI technologies educators can provide personalized feedback, adaptive learning paths, and real time analytics on student progress. On the other hand, AI cannot yet cultivate supportive and stimulating learning environment, which is one of the essential characteristics for engaged learners and classrooms where students feel valued, supported, and encouraged to take risks and explore new ideas. Thus, human control remains essential in designing learning conditions and activities that promote intrinsic motivation, creativity, and critical thinking. Establishing the right balance between human control and automation of learning activities in the age of artificial intelligence is an important issue that needs to be explored and debated among researchers, educators, and policy makers so that we do not end in a reverse adaptation.
