Abstract

Error correction is an essential component of most data storage and transmission protocols. It allows for the full utilization of data potential, even in the presence of disturbances. Quantum computers could find many practical applications, such as chemical simulations or number factorization. However, they face the problem of disturbances in an even more severe way than classical computers. Therefore, it is not surprising that the vast majority of the scientific community believes that quantum error correction is a necessary component of a useful quantum computer. I will present the intuitions behind this view and discuss the basics of quantum error correction. Additionally, I will provide a subjective overview of unexplored yet promising areas, both in theoretical aspects and in implementation matters.
